These light and fluffy cookies owe their irresistible, melt-in-your-mouth texture to cornstarch. With just a touch of vanilla extract, powdered sugar, and butter, these Melting Moment Logs are not only simple to make but also a must-have addition to your holiday baking lineup!
One bite, and you’ll never forget them!
When I think of Christmas, it’s all about the sweets—cookies, desserts, and those nostalgic aromas. Nothing embodies the holiday spirit more than a batch of buttery cookies! Today, I’m excited to share with you our family’s favorite recipe for Melting Moments, a tried-and-true classic that has been tested and loved over the years.
Growing up, I knew these as split-second cookies, though they’re more commonly called Melting Moments, Melt-In-Your-Mouth Cookies, or Cornstarch Cookies. Whatever the name, they dissolve on your tongue in a flurry of powdered sugar, and they’re gone in a flash, leaving you craving just one more.
These cookies are so simple to make that I almost feel guilty posting the recipe. Seriously! They require minimal effort and just a few ingredients, making them a go-to treat you’ll find yourself baking again and again.

Why You’ll Love This Melting Moments Cookies
If you’re scrambling to start your holiday baking or searching for the perfect festive cookie to bring to a potluck or gift to a friend or neighbor, your search ends here! Every year, I pick a personal favorite from my 24 Cookies of Christmas series, and although I haven’t finished this year’s batch yet, I can already tell you this one is a top contender. In fact, as of now, it’s number one on my list! And just when you think these cookies can’t get any better, try enjoying a couple with a hot cup of coffee or tea after a long day of holiday shopping. They’re the perfect remedy for the stress of dealing with mall crowds.
Melting Moment Logs truly stand apart. I’ve probably eaten more of these than I should have, but once you experience that melt-in-your-mouth sensation, it’s hard to stop! They’re bite-sized, so you can easily pop one in your mouth, and they dissolve in buttery perfection. Absolutely worth the indulgence!
I’ve always had a soft spot for classic shortbread, and Melting Moment Cookies are one of my all-time favorites. Whether you know them as Split Second Cookies or Cornstarch Cookies, the result is the same: a melt-in-your-mouth treat that leaves you craving more. These cookies are a holiday tradition in our home, but I can’t resist sneaking in a few batches throughout the year whenever the craving hits.

Ingredients for Melting Moments Cookies
Here’s a list of ingredients you’ll need to prepare this recipe. For the exact measurements, be sure to check the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Butter – Make sure it’s at room temperature! I’ve used both salted and unsalted butter, and there’s no noticeable difference in taste or texture. Use whichever you have available.
- Confectioner’s Sugar – This adds a touch of sweetness, but more importantly, it contributes to the melt-in-your-mouth texture.
- Vanilla Extract – A classic and commonly used flavoring in cakes and cookies.
- Flour – Regular all-purpose flour works perfectly here. I haven’t tested this recipe with other types of flour.
- Cornstarch – This ingredient helps create a tender, crumbly texture in cakes, cookies, and shortbread, and in this recipe, it adds to the “melting” sensation.
- Salt – A staple in baking, salt enhances and balances sweetness.

How To Make This Melting Moments Cookies
Cream the butter and ¼ cup of confectioner’s sugar together until light and fluffy. Mix in the vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour, cornstarch, and salt, beating until the dough comes together smoothly.
Divide the dough into three portions and roll each into a log about 1 inch in diameter. Wrap each log in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Once chilled, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unwrap one log at a time and slice into 1-inch thick rounds. Arrange the slices on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each cookie. Refrigerate again for 30 minutes.
When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the baking sheet from the fridge and bake for 8 minutes, or until the bottoms are lightly golden. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 3 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Dust generously with the remaining confectioner’s sugar while still warm.

Storage Options
For most cookies, they taste best at room temperature but don’t stay fresh if left out for too long. To keep cookies fresh, store them in a cookie jar or food-safe container with a lid on your countertop, where they’ll last 3-5 days. You can also refrigerate them in a food-safe container. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply take out the desired amount and arrange them in a single layer on a plate. Let them sit at room temperature for about 5 minutes, and they’ll be ready to eat!
If you want to freeze your Melting Moment Logs, go right ahead! Once the cookies have cooled completely, store them in a clean, freezer-safe container with a tight-fitting lid. I like to place a layer of plastic wrap over the top before sealing the container to help keep the cookies as fresh as possible.
These cookies can be frozen for up to three months. If you’re gifting previously frozen cookies, lay them out on a wire rack to thaw completely. Wait for any condensation to evaporate before packaging. Once thawed, you can either stack them in cellophane bags with a ribbon or arrange them in a cookie tin or box.
Variations and Substitutions
- Flour Swap: You can use gluten-free flour for a celiac-friendly version. Just add a pinch of xanthan gum for texture.
- Flavor Twist: Add a teaspoon of lemon or orange zest for a citrusy pop, or swap vanilla extract with almond or coconut extract for a fun flavor boost.
- Filling Fun: Try sandwiching cookies with lemon curd, Nutella, or jam instead of buttercream for a different taste.
- Spice It Up: Add a dash of cinnamon or cardamom to the dough for a warm, spiced version.
These little tweaks can create a whole new cookie experience!
