Have you ever tried making gumbo in a slow cooker? It’s super easy and so delicious! This recipe for slow cooker gumbo is the real deal – it’s authentic! The dish includes all of the classic and traditional ingredients that go into a gumbo, all of which are cooked to perfection in a slow cooker.
Plus, you can adjust the spice level to your liking, so feel free to dial it down or add more kick. Not only is this family fave gumbo bursting with flavor, but it’s also a healthy option. Give it a try – your taste buds will thank you!
You have to try my family’s favorite gumbo recipe! We make it often and it’s the star of the show. And the best part? You probably already have most (if not all) of the ingredients!
What is the cooking time?
The fastest way to cook the dish is on High and for 3-4 hours. You can also cook it on Low for 7-8 hours. You need to cook it long enough for the chicken to become tender and shred easily. The chicken being tender is what really gives this dish the wow factor.
However, in a hurry, this dish still needs 3 or 4 hours to cook on a High setting. For extra flavor and tenderness, I recommend opting for even longer at 7-8 hours. Whichever time you choose, I promise the wait is worth it! Your patience will be rewarded with a delectable bowl of yummy goodness.
What if I don’t like okra, can I substitute it?
While I don’t recommend subbing out the okra (as its traditional and thickens the gumbo!), I also get that many people don’t like the ‘slimy’ texture of okra. That does go away with cooking the okra for a long period of time. However, v you’re still not convinced, you can use green beans or some other vegetable of your liking—though it becomes less of a gumbo and more of a stew.
What shrimp should I buy?
When buying shrimp, you can find it in various forms. If you are an ardent shrimp lover, you might want to reconsider using already-cooked shrimp as it lacks quality and has a noticeable taste difference. Shrimp that has been cooked is then frozen. This means that you have to cook it again for a recipe. That can lead to the shrimp being cooked for too long. Hence, it’s best to opt for raw shrimp, which takes only a few minutes to cook. So, the next time you’re planning to cook a shrimp dish, choose raw shrimp over pre-cooked ones for a better taste experience.
Does the cut of the chicken matter?
When preparing this recipe, I opted for boneless and skinless chicken breasts. However, skinless chicken thighs are also a viable option as they require the same cooking time. Using chicken thighs instead of breasts can add some extra juiciness to the dish. For those short on time, cooked rotisserie chicken can be used. Simply cube the chicken and you’ll save yourself a bit of time in the preparation stage.
